In March 2010, the Island Energy Task Force, in partnership with the Island Institute and VCharge, launched the Island Affordable Energy Project. This two-phased pilot project will develop and test the hardware, software and pricing mechanisms – the "smart grid" – needed to use excess electricity from the Fox Islands Wind Project to supplement traditional heating and transportation fuels. As a result, it will demonstrate how to lower the existing high heating costs on the islands and create benefits of a more cost-efficient island grid.
